Celebration will be co- hosted by the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History and Crest Photography, Inc. Location: Baird Auditorium, Washington DC
Invitation in Partnership from: The American Hiking Society, Silver Spring, MD & Partnership for the National Trails System, Madison, WI & Federal Interagency Council on Trails, Washington, DC
Our Goals for the Grand Finale:
- To honor the legacy of President Johnson for his foresight in creating the National Trail System—it is our sincerest hope that his daughters Lynda Robb and Lucy Johnson and their families will be able to attend.
- To recognize the hundreds of thousands of volunteers for their efforts over the past 4 decades in the creation and maintenance the trails. (without them the trail system would not exist)
- To acknowledge the high degree of cooperation necessary in the complex partnership between public and private entities to be good stewards of nature.
- To affirm the role of conservation plays within the trail system.
- To hail the attributes of those who envisioned, manually created, and use the trails as being the same core values that have made America such a great country.
- To advocate a more holistic approach to health.
- To encourage citizens to go take a walk around their neighborhood, in a local park or on a trail near their home.
- To increase knowledge/awareness of this wondrous national treasure, by publicly celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the creation of the National Trails System.
To facilitate these goals we would like to hold a ceremony in Washington DC.
During this ceremony we would like to thank and publicly introduce individuals and representatives of organizations that significantly had an impact on our ability to complete this venture. Hopefully the attendees will include many of the trail organizations and government officials involved at various levels in the chain of command of the NTS.
Individuals, who are prominently known for their passion concerning a particular theme of our eight goals, will be asked to share a contemplative epitome with the American people. We also want to acknowledge Ed Talone as the first person to hike all the NSTs, publicly he never received the due credit he so richly deserved—we want to right that wrong! Prior to the ceremony we hoped that we could serve dinner for all the honored guests and attendees. The total time involved around 4 hours 5 PM to 9:00 PM
