2009 - New England NST
This trail combines three New England Trails that date from the 1930s - the Metacomet - Monadnock Trail, the Mettabessett Trail, and the Metacomet Trail into a 215-mile route linking together 41 communities in Connecticut and Massachusetts. A new segment - the Menunkatuck Trail - links these trails to the shore of Long Island Sound. The combined pathway explores iconic New England landscapes along both the western and eastern ridges of the Connecticut River Valley, known here as the Pioneer Valley. Its establishment as an NST and protection were strongly supported by Rep, John Olver (D-Ma). Since designation, segments in Massachusetts have been relocated from private lands to state-owned public lands. This Trail is administered by NPS in close cooperation with the Connecticut Forest and Park Association and the Berkshire Chapter of the Appalachian Mountain Club.
